2012 will see the return of 5 street parties in Winchester:

Saturday 12th May: The Constabulary ‘Mad Hatters’ Tea Party
Sunday 3rd June: Jubilate ‘A Street Party fit for a Queen’
Saturday 14th July: Parchment Street ‘2012 Celebration’ Party
Saturday 8th September: The Brooks ‘Shop ‘til You Drop’ Party
Saturday 8th September: Jewry Street ‘Music to Dine for’ Party

Winchester BID is joining forces with the Guildhall Winchester and The University of Winchester to present a truly community spirited Street Party in The Broadway, overflowing with entertainment, interactive workshops, food and drink and a dose of affordable, old-fashioned FUN!

Artists, musicians, magicians, comedians, actors and dancers of all ages and from all areas of the Winchester District will come together to give the community of Winchester an opportunity to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee in style on Sunday 3rd June 2012.

Winchester BID is offering BID members the chance to be involved in Jubilate by selling food and drink at the event.

Get Involved – Winchester 2012 Sporting Heroes Trail

To help involve local businesses within the Winchester 2012 events, the BID and Winchester City Council is organising a trail to help move footfall in and around the city, and most importantly into businesses.

The BID is searching for businesses to ‘adopt’ one of the local sporting personalities listed on the Winchester 2012 website. This will then form the trail route for visitors to follow. The visitors will need to get their ‘special passport’ stamped at each business and hopefully they’ll be encouraged to spend their money along the way!

At the end of the trail, each child will be able to collect a novelty medal from the Tourist Information Centre. The businesses, wanting to be a part of the trail will be encouraged to learn simple facts about the athlete they adopt and depending on their busy schedule, it may be possible to arrange the athlete to visit the business to raise publicity.

The BID will be providing the passports and stamps so there is no financial implication or onerous effort required. We’re hoping to launch the trail at the Sports Festival on Sunday 20th May.

Introducing Southern Waste Management

Since August 2011, Winchester BID has been working with Meercat Associates to design a waste and recycling scheme to be implemented for the benefit of its members across the city. Meercat have carried out a survey to gain an understanding of members’ requirements and waste management practises. The information collected was then used as a basis for a full market tender exercise and as such, the BID is pleased to appoint Southern Waste Management to implement the new cost-saving scheme to BID members.

FREE hanging baskets again for BID members

Winchester BID funded 363 hanging baskets in 2011 for businesses in the city and will be increasing this figure to over 400 larger baskets, window boxes and troughs for 2012.

The BID has appointed Windowflowers, a family owned nursery, which provide displays for the City of Westminster amongst many other locations in the country. Windowflowers will also be providing the general maintenance and watering of the baskets, which had previously been provided by Winchester City Council’s contractors.

Having recently undertaken an audit, the BID aims to supply hanging baskets where brackets already exist. Some of the brackets may need to be moved or replaced to accommodate the 20” baskets. There are a few larger premises, which have been identified as being able to accommodate window boxes, as brackets are not able to be erected.

The displays will be installed late May, maintained throughout the summer and removed in late September/early October.
Any BID member is entitled to a free hanging basket and those without brackets outside their business can contact the BID to request one. Please note that you will need to obtain permission from the owner of the building for a bracket…
