Winchester business chiefs back Silver Hill scheme

13 April, 2012

Winchester business chiefs have back proposals to redevelop Silver Hill.

The city council has agreed a scheme with developers Henderson Global Investors UK to build new homes, offices, a bus station and doctor’s surgery in the Friarsgate and Broadway areas.

Now Chris Turner, executive director of Winchester Business Improvement District, said the plan would make the city more attractive place for business. At the BID AGM, he said: “Silver Hill is going to be big for many of us with its retail offices as well as housing. “It’s a very exciting and vibrant development in an important part of the city.”

He added: “We want to work with the city council and developers to make sure they are making the right decisions.”

The council and developers have agreed a plan for the compulsory purchase of land between Friarsgate and the Broadway but it has received 29 objections from residents and pressure groups.

A public inquiry will decide the fate of the scheme in the summer.
