Jamie Oliver to open new Winchester restaurant

22 February, 2012

CELEBRITY chef Jamie Oliver is opening a new restaurant in Hampshire.

The Jamie Oliver Group has taken a 25-year lease on a building that was a former Pizza Hut, and will open a Union Jacks restaurant later this year.

The branch in Winchester is thought to be the first Union Jacks outside London, where several branches have opened in the past six months.

The restaurant offers something new – a British pizza. The pizzas have more traditional UK toppings such as Cheddar, red onion and pork, Stilton, crackling and watercress.

A spokesman for Green and Partners, the letting agents, said Union Jacks was due to move in to start fitting out in the next two to three weeks.

The restaurant is expected to create about 35 jobs and is due to open in mid-summer, said a spokeswoman for Mr Oliver.

She added: “Winchester is a beautiful city and we feel we’ve found a fantastic site for the restaurant. We have had some great feedback from the first Union Jacks in London and so hopefully we can bring something really special to the city.”

Since emerging in the 1990s, Mr Oliver has built up a multi-million-pound food empire, including restaurants, TV shows, books and evangelical food campaigns.

Chris Turner, executive director of Winchester Business Improvement District, said: “It is brilliant news and adds to the lustre of the city. We had heard that Jamie Oliver and Nando’s were lined up. Either would have been great.”
