BUSINESS chiefs have set a date to hold talks with the new firm behind Winchester’s £135m Silver Hill Renaissance.
Henderson Global Investors will meet with the city’s Business Improvement District on Tuesday, November 15. It comes after BID members discussed the £135m scheme with city council chiefs in August. Following that meeting, traders said they wanted to meet Henderson staff in person to learn more about their plans.
At the BID’s latest meeting on Tuesday (September 27) its executive director Chris Turner said Henderson had accepted the invitation.
Its scheme, which was originally drawn up by another firm, Thornfield, includes a replacement bus station. More than 200 homes and around 95,000 sq ft of retail space – roughly the size of a football pitch – will also be provided.
BID members raised concerns in August that large chains would dominate the scheme, leaving little space for independent firms. Work is unlikely to start until Henderson controls all the land required between Friarsgate and The Broadway.
Winchester City Council is poised to launch compulsory purchase orders to assemble the land, and building work could start in early 2013.
At the same BID meeting on Tuesday (September 27), members received a brief update on the High Street market dispute. Prof Turner said the city council would carry out a review throughout October on how the market is operating. The row stems from extending the pitches from Middle Brook Street into High Street earlier this year. Several High Street stores have complained about the disruption, but the expanded market has its supporters too. Following the council’s month-long review, the authority will decide if any changes need to be made.
